The Adirondack Region of Northern New York includes the 6 million-acre Adirondack Park, surrounding countryside and the entire western shore of Lake Champlain. The region is best known for its mountains and lakes and includes the highest peaks in New York State. The Adirondack Park was created in 1882 by the New York State Legislature, which took measures to ensure that these public lands will remain forever wild. With 40 state-operated campgrounds, thousands of miles of hiking trails, and canoe routes and 42 peaks over 4,000 feet in height the Adirondack region has become the ultimate playground of outdoor enthusiasts everywhere. |
