Walking in Cinque Terre, 5 days

Individual self-guided hiking tour

Experience the beautiful Cinque Terre over a 5-day trip. On firmly established paths you will walk from village to village, through forests, vineyards and through a spectacular terrace landscape with incredible views of the sea. In addition to visiting the historic cities of Levanto and Portovenere, the tour takes you to the five colorful villages, that give name to Cinque Terre: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. Today the area is a National Park, and a unique part of Italy.

Trip Grading
This tour is a level 2 trip. The hikes follow well-maintained trails, and there will be ascents and steep descents on parts of the routes. With some knowledge of hiking and a good physique, plenty of wonderful experiences await you on this trip. On average you will walk 4-6 hours per day. However, there is a small local coastal train that stops in many of the villages, making it possible to shorten or lengthen the daily routes to suit you best.

Day 1 Arriving in Levanto

If you arrive early in Levanto, it is possible to either go for a swim, take a walk in the charming town, or do the first bit of walking in the area. This walk will take you to Monterosso al Mare, overlooking one of the area's finest promontories.

After passing an old hermitage ruin from the 1100s, you come to a view point where it really becomes evident, just how beautiful this coastline is. The road down to Monterosso is steep and after enjoying the colorful houses in the old town, it is possible to take the local coast train back to Levanto.

Day 2 Walking from Levanto to Deiva Marina

Today you walk west from Levanto. The first part of the path follows along the beach, then the trail goes up into the hilly terrain, before it again descends to the small coastal village of Levanto. From here the path goes over the hillsides, where the trails will take you through Framura and Costa, which are small charming clusters of houses, beautifully situated on the hillsides.

From here there are also good views of the rocked coastline and the deep blue sea. A steep descent brings you down to sea level in the resort town of Deiva Marina. Here it is possible to take the train back to Levanto, or continue the walk to Moneglia.

This extension will take you through several of the charming small coast villages. Find a yourself a nice café in one of the villages and enjoy a real Italian coffee with the view of the beautiful coast. The local coast train stops in several of these small villages, so you can stop the walk when it suits you, and go back to Levanto.

Day 3 Hiking from Riomaggiore to Vernazza and Monterosso

Check out of the hotel in Levanto after breakfast and take the train to Riomaggiore, the most southern of the five villages that lends its name to the Cinque Terre - The Five Areas. Here you can leave your luggage at the next hotel before you begin today's walk to Manarola, an attractive village with colorful houses clinging on to the hillsides and overlooking the beautiful rocky look of the natural port. From Manarola you walk up through wine terraces and down towards Corniglia, which is located on a ridge providing spectacular views of the sea.

Through vineyards and citrus groves, the route continues, and as you approach Vernazza and its ancient fortress, you will experience some of the region's top views. The path winds its way up the hillside, before a steep descent brings you down to Vernazza, the most beautiful of all the villages on the coast.

From the castle tower in the small town the view of the city and harbor is unique. Here it will be ideal to enjoy a drink at one of the charming cafés, before taking the train back to Riomaggiore.

If you did not pass Monterosso on the arrival day, it will be possible to extend your hiking day, and continue along the coast to Monterosso.

Day 4 Hiking from Riomaggiore to Campiglia and Portovenere

Today's walk takes you in an easterly direction to Campiglia and Portovenere. From Riomaggiore the path takes you up a flight of stairs to the sanctuary Madonna di Montenero, which is situated on a gorgeous ridge providing stunning views of the deep blue sea.

The path continues up the cliff-side through wine terraces on to Sentiero Rosso. The path stays on the ridge with views to different sides of the terraces. This path continues throughout the entire Cinque Terre, and takes you to the small village of Campiglia, where it is possible to buy refreshments.

The trail then goes through a pine forest and becomes narrower before it opens up and leads you to Portovenere with several spectacular views along the way. Situated above Portovenere you will pass an old castle from the 1600s, and a staircase leads you down to the village. Here there is time to stroll around the streets before you take one of the local boat cruises back Riomaggiore.
