There are exciting experiences in store for those, who embark on a walking holiday in Montenegro. The country has only been independent since 2006 and the country is developing fast.
The Montenegrins are open-hearted and want to develop their tourism. Therefore, signs and information are both written in Montenegrin and English. Especially the younger generations know English at a good level. The older generation does what they can in the form of friendly body language to help.
Magnificent routes, landscapes and sights can be experienced in this tour, which, among other things, brings you to Kotor Bay, which today is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The small mountain villages have amazing stories, beautiful buildings, interesting ruins and, not least, a terrain that is a real pleasure to wander around.
This tour follows along mainly good trails (military and shepherd trails). In addition, there will be short sections on gravel roads and smaller town roads.
There are some steep and rocky ascents and descents, approx. 500 - 900 height meters daily.

Transfer from Podgorica airport is possible - see more under practical information.
Mount Vrmac is situated like a barrier between the innermost part of the Bay, Bay of Kotor and the outer part, Bay of Tivat. The best hike starts in Kotor on the military zig-zag-trail named after Austrian emperor Franz-Josef (in local language: Franjo Josip) and climbs um to the mighty fortress "Vermac" built in 1892 and still almost completely intact until the present day. From here you follow the mountain ridge to the highest top of Vrmac, Sveti Ilija (765 m). The descent follows an old shepherd's trail down to the village of Prcanj, where you can visit the ruins of an old church destroyed in an earthquake and finally can enjoy your coffee directly at the seaside promenade.
On the northern side of the bay, you start in Orahovac village, follow a zig-zag-trail through the woods to a deserted village called Stepen. From there you go up on the backside of a hill to the ruins of Vranovo Brdo fortress, where an absolutely breathtaking view awaits you. Then another military path takes you down to the small
town Perast. There it is possible to take a boat to visit the famous island with the church Gospa od Skrpjela (our Lady of the Rock).
Optional: Go back to your hotel by boat! Very nice and rewarding! (see more under practical information)
Right from the old town of Kotor we follow the old trade route which once connected Cetinje with Kotor – even Billard tables were transported along this trail! This old horse trail with more than 70 zig-zags to Krstac pass offers countless magnificent views torwards the bay. Upon arrival at the pass 900m, continue another 2 km to in Njegusi and have a try of local Njegusi ham and cheese. Return to Kotor. Overnight in Kotor.
Drive to the center of the Nationalpark Lovcen. Here starts are very rewarding circular walk to a fantastic view point and remote settlements.
After return continue to the royal capital of Cetinje. A city walk takes you through Montenegro ́s history. Continue to Budva. Overnight in Budva.
A short transfer (15 min) takes us to the starting point at the monastery Praskavica. There you start a pleasant panorama walk above the Riviera of Budva. Follow an impressive staircase a monk built centuries ago. Before you climb to the monastery Ogradenica, visit in a side step the women ́s convent of Rustovo.
After a refreshing stop at the church of Ogradenica you start your descent to the village of Blizikuce. Return by public bus (regular) to your car.
Finally, the tour in the National park Skadar lake: It is a short, but very nice hike especially for nature lovers.
In the park, it is quite likely to spot some turtles, lizards, non-poisonous snakes and a lot of bats inside a big cave, which is at the turning point of this tour. You start in the small village Rijeka Crnojevica, follow a river, pass an old hydropower station, ruins of a mill and finally reach the cave (20 m wide, 10 m high and around 60 m long, completely lit by daylight).
The way back crosses the river, ascends to a nice viewpoint and to the oldest part of the village with a church and a graveyard, and at the end you cross the ancient stone bridge to get directly back to the village center..
This tour is best combined with a relaxing boat ride on the Skadar lake, where it may even be possible to spot pelicans. This can be chosen as an Extra Option in page 2 of the booking form.
After breakfast you'll need to pack your bags and check out.
