Italy - The unknown Amalfi Coast

Here is a unique opportunity to experience the eastern part of the Amalfi Coast. Unlike other places in the popular area, there are very few foreign tourists here. But that does not mean that the area has less to offer - on the contrary.
The tour offers some spectacular coastal scenery, walking through charming villages such as Vietri sul Mare and the picturesque fishing village Cetara. The trail takes you past historic buildings such as the monastery of the Cava dei Tirreni valley, despite its age of more than a thousand years, is still one of the most important monasteries in southern Italy. You will walk through a scenery that offers a dramatic rocky landscape and lush alpine meadows, through chestnut forests, citrus groves and beautiful wide sandy beaches.

This trip is well suited for those who already have walked some of the more classic routes of the coast, or those who just want to go on the less trodden trails on the Amalfi Coast. It is a moderately easy walk, well suited to those who have little experience with walking holidays, and a generally good physical health. On this tour you will discover that it is with good reason the Amalfi Coast has become one of the most popular Italian coastlines, and you will learn that it only requires a little effort to get "off the beaten track". Small paths will take you away from the tourist crowd and out into the countryside. Many of the trails are marked, but in several places it is necessary to carefully follow the given descriptions and maps.

Average walking time: ca. 5 to 6 hours per day.

  • Away from the tourist crowd, the western coast of Amalfi is a great experience
  • Picturesque fishing villages and fascinating rocky landscapes spiced up with historic buildings
  • The Benedictine Monastery in Capo di Cava
  • The sacred and unique Madonna dell'Avvocata with views of the Mediterranean
  • Magnificent old buildings and ruins which dates more than a thousand years back
  • Walking through lushly green alpine meadows, beautiful citrus groves and along wide, sandy beaches
  • Accommodation at charming hotels in four beautiful towns and villages on the Amalfi Coast
  • The spectacular fortress of San Nicolo de 'Thoro Plano, beautifully situated on the hillside

Day 1 Arrival in Salerno

Your hotel will just be a short bus of taxi ride from the train station of Salerno. Depending on arrival time you can spend the rest of the day exploring this historic and beautiful city and take a stroll along the promenade (Lungomare), which offers a magnificent view of both the Amalfi Coast and the Cilento National Park.

Day 2 Vietri sul Mare to the ancient Benedictine Abbey and Corpo di Cava

After a stroll through the center of Vietri sul Mare, with the opportunity to take a closer look at some of its many small ceramic shops, you will walk through the narrow alleys of the village and down to the marina. From here you will begin the walk towards the magnificent Raito, a hamlet situated in with beautiful views of the coast and the Sea - an ideal place for a cup of Italian coffee. The walk continues up to another small charming hamlet - Albori. Then the trail takes you further inland towards the Valley of Cava Dei Tirreni. After passing the sanctuaries of Laconti and San Vincenzo, the path leads into the shade of the chestnut forest and continues to the end destination of the day, Corpo di Cava.
A thousand year old Benedictine Abbey is located here and Corpi di Cava is beautifully situated on the hillside, high above the Valley of Cava dei Tirreni and opposite Lattari mountains.
On this day it is also possible to find one of the hidden wonders of the area – the ruins of a Roman aqueduct that still stands 20 meters tall.

Like the following days, the walking paths of the day are largely unknown to the common hiking tourist, so you will have to pay close attention to the walking descriptions.

Day 3 Corpo di Cava to unique Madonna dell'Avvocata and Cetara

Today you will be walking on one of the most famous pilgrimage trails of the area. The path leads you past the holy hermitage Madonna dell'Avvocata, situated on an elevated spectacular natural rocky balcony, from where you will have unique and magnificent panoramic views of the Amalfi Coast.
From the abbey in Corpo di Cava you will follow the path up through the golden chestnut forest to a small clearing where Capella Vecchia (an old chapel) is located. Enjoy the gorgeous views of both Vietri sul Mare and Salerno in the south, and the top of Monte Avvocata in the west.
Then follow a nice path through the area next to the lonely Madonna dell'Avvocata, built in year 1485 and beautifully situated on the edge of the hillside from where the impressive views reaches the great blue sea and far up the the coast. This site lies away from the popular tourist routes, and it is amongst the locals known to be one of the most beautiful viewpoints on the Amalfi Coast.

After a break at Madonna dell'Avvocata you will walk down to Cetara, a very beautiful situated village, which clings to the coast. The descent offers walking along winding paths through areas with green vegetation and fine examples of the local rural architecture.
As you approach the village, there are beautiful viewpoints overlooking the fishing village Cetera. Upon arrival there is time to stroll through the village or visit the beach, a perfect place to enjoy a well-deserved refreshment. There is a 10-minute walk along the coastal road to your hotel, where you can enjoy a nice dinner while the sun sets into the sea.

Day 4 Walking to Maori and through a spectacular rocky landscape

This morning you will jump on a local bus from the stop in front of your hotel to the small village Erchie, just outside Cetara. From here you will walk along a hilly dirt road, to the small village of Badia and further on to the coastal village of Maiori. The first stretch of the walk offers stunning views of the Amalfi Coast and many interesting views down through the small valleys. Among other things, you will see unique rock formations as "Bear" and "The man on the horse".
Shortly before the arriving in Maiori, there is a steep climb from the village Salicerchie and towards the spectacular fortress of San Nicolo de 'Thoro Plano. With its more than 1000 yearlong history it is beautifully integrated into the hillside. You will continue via an ancient pilgrimage trail up to Madonna dell'Avvocata, before heading down to the town center of Maiori. Here it is possible to relax on the city's wide beach, known for being one of the finest on the Amalfi Coast. It is only a short walk from here to the charming coastal village of Minori, where you find your hotel. Enjoy an evening in the Mediterranean atmosphere with a stroll through the characteristic and charming village.
