Italy - Walking in Cinque Terre, 5 days

Now it is possible to experience the beautiful Cinque Terre on a 5-day trip. On solid developed paths you will walk from village to village, through forests, vineyards and through a spectacular terrace landscap with incredible views of the sea. In addition to visiting the historic cities of Levanto and Portovenere, the tour takes you to the five charming villages, that give name to Cinque Terre: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. 

This tour is a level 2 trip. The tour goes on well-maintained trails, and there will be ascents and steep decents on parts of the routes. With some knowledge of hiking and a good physique, plenty of wonderful experiences await you on this trip. Along the coast is a small local coastal train that stops in many of the villages. This makes it possible to shorten or lengthen the daily routes to suit you. On average you will walk 4-6 hours per day.

Day 1 Arrival in Levanto

Check-in at the hotel.

If you arrive early to Levanto, it is possible to either go for a swim, take a walk in the charming town, or do the first bit of walking in the area. This walk will take you to Monterosso al Mare, overlooking one of the area's finest promontories. After passing an old hermitage ruin from the 1100s, you come to a view point where it really becomes evident, just how beautiful this coastline is. The road down to Monterosso is steep and after enjoying the colorful houses in the old town, it is possible to take the local coast train back to Levanto.

Day 2 Walking from Levanto to Deiva Marina

The route on this day will take you from Levanto in a western direction, along the beach and up into the hilly terrain, before it again descends to the small coastal village of Levanto. From here the path goes over the hillsides, where the trails will take you through Framura and Costa, which are small charming clusters of houses, beautifully situated on the hillsides. From here there is also good view points of the rocked coastline and the deep blue sea. A steep descend brings you down to sea level in the resort town of Deiva Marina. Here it is possible to take the train back to Levanto, or continue the walk to Moneglia. This extension will take you through several of the charming small coast villages. Find a yourself a nice café in one of the villages and enjoy a real Italian coffee with the view of the beautiful coast. The local coast train stops in several of these small villages, so you can stop the walk when it suits you, and go back to Levanto. 

Day 3 Hiking from Riomaggiore to Vernazza and Monterosso
Check out of the hotel in Levanto after breakfast and take the train to Riomaggiore, the most southern of the five villages that lends its name to the Cinque Terre - The five areas). Here you can leave your luggage at the next hotel before you begin today's walk to Manarola, an attractive village with colorful houses clinging on to the hillsides and overlooking the beautiful rocky look of the natural port. From Manarola you walk up through wine terraces and down towards Corniglia, which is located on a ridge providing spectacular views of the sea. Through vineyards and citrus groves, the route continues, and as you approach Vernazza and its ancient fortress, you will experience some of the region's top views. The path winds its way up the hillside, before a steep descent brings you down to Vernazza, the most beautiful of all the villages on the coast. From the castle tower in the small town the view of the city and harbor is unique. Here it will be ideal to enjoy a drink at one of the charming cafés, before taking the train back to Riomaggiore. 
If you did not pass Monterosso on the arrival day, it will be possible to extend your hiking day, and continue along the coast to Monterosso.
Day 4 Hiking from Riomaggiore to Campiglia and Portovenere
The walk of today takes you from in an easterly direction to Campiglia and Portovenere. From Riomaggiore the path takes you up a flight of stairs to the sanctuary Madonna di Montenero, which is situated on a gorgous ridge providing stunning views of the deep blue sea. The path continues up the cliff-side through wine terraces on to Sentiero Rosso. The path stays on the ridge with views alternately to one and the other side and it continues straight through the entire Cinque Terre, and takes you to the small village of Campiglia, where it is possible to buy refreshments. The path goes through the pine forest and becomes narrower befire it opens up and leads you to Portovenere with several spectacular views along the way. Situated above Portovenere you will pass an old castle from the 1600s, and a staircase leads you down to the village. Here there is time to stroll around the streets before you take one of the local boat cruises back Riomaggiore. 
Day 5 Departure

After breakfast it is time to check-out from the hotel for an individual journey home.

Note: The price is based on at least two participants accommodated in a double or twin room.

On this tour you are on your own without a tour guide. We have arranged for overnight stays, route descriptions and maps, but you must organise your own transportation to the starting point of the destination.

Dates of departure 
This tour can be arranged with daily departures from mid march to mid november.


Please note that transportation to and from Levanto, Italy is NOT included in the package, and that you have to make sure to book your own flight. This is easily done online. It is your responsibility to ensure that the flight schedule fits start and end dates of your trip. We recommend that you book the trip with us before you buy your plane tickets.
Pisa is the nearest and most accessible airport for Levanto. Check for the direct flight options that suit you the best. Alternatively you can fly to/from Milan, but train transportation is a little longer to Levanto from there.
The tour from Pisa to Levanto and back from Riomaggiore to Pisa, is most easily done by train. On it is easy to get an overview of times and destinations on the Italian trains (Pisa/Levanto takes about 1.5 hours, Milan/Levanto takes about 3 hours) but since it is difficult to purchase or change tickets online, we recommend that you buy them directly from the ticket machines at the train station.

Local Transportation
The local coastal train line, has frequent departures, and tickets can be purchased directly at the station (1-3 euros).
On days when the boatcruise between Portovenere and Riomaggiore is not operating, it is possible to take the local bus back. For more info on this in your walking descriptions for the respective day.


You will stay two nights in Levanto at a 3-star tourist class hotel and two nights in Riomaggiore on a 3-star tourist class hotel. Breakfast is included at both hotels.

Trip grading

The daily walking tours as described in the itinerary is level 2. As you are walking individually without a guide, it is possible to make your own decisions on how far you want to proceed from day to day, you can turn around and head back or jump on the local costal train back whenever you wish to. Cancellation Insurance

Cancellation Insurance is the customer's own responsibility. When you book a trip with us, you should consider whether you want to take out cancellation insurance against sudden illness, or whether you are already covered. You have to arrange the cancellation insurance in you home country.

Travel insurance

We highly recommend that you are covered by a good travel insurance covering at least Medical Expenses, Illness, Personal Accident, Baggage and Repatriation. The customer is responsible to take the necessary travel insurance that covers these costs. Mountain Adventures, or our local partners, do not have any responsibility for our customers not being covered by a necessary travel insurance. You have to arrange your insurance in your home country.

Passports and Visa

It is the customer’s responsibility to have a valid passport. It is also the customer’s responsibility to seek and obtain any necessary visa for travelling to the booked destination. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the expected return. Note that there may be special visa requirements for different foreign nationalities. Please note that processing time for visas to some countries may be several weeks. Mountain Adventures have no responsibility for any lack of travel documents. Be aware of any transit visa requirements.


We advise you to contact a medical specialist or your personal doctor or a licensed vaccination clinic. In case vaccination is recommended it is advised to bring your vaccination certificate when traveling.
